What you need to know

Keep children busy this summer with Val Pierce's knitted travel bag and games set.

This holiday project really is a bag of goodies! Combining a modern take on the traditional noughts and crosses game, as well as five knitted finger puppets, this practical bag pattern is just the ticket when it comes to keeping the kids occupied. The handy bag provides storage and a playing surface for the game. The little chick and mother hen finger puppets are great take-along toys that can be used for fun adventures and story-telling.

Top knit tips

As this play set is going to be used by children it is important that the buttons on the noughts and crosses pieces are firmly secured. If you'd prefer not to use buttons, you could always knit the final few rows of the shape in a contrasting shade to add a coloured centre. Ensure the small parts of the finger puppets, such as the beaks and wings, are firmly attached by sewing through the knitting several times.

The boat could easily be replaced by a motif of your choice. Just get some knitter’s graph paper and draw your own design over 31 sts and 38 rows to fit the pocket panel!
