We chatted to LK designer Siân Brown to get to know her a bit better.
Name: Siân Brown.
Speciality: Garment and homewares designs.
Website or blog: www.sianbrown.com
Favourite pattern designed for Let’s Knit: A garment that I did a long time ago now called Ffion. It was a cropped cardigan with a textured blackberry stitch rib and I still wear it years later, it’s great for layering.
First thing you knitted: A small scarf for my Sindy doll, in garter stitch. It had holes, which were fashionable much later in the punk era!
Best knitting memory: My mum used to knit lots of clothes for me when I was little, and she always made tiny replicas for my doll so that we could dress the same!
Best knitting tip: It’s always do a tension swatch, and sew things up really carefully to avoid ruining all the hard work.
Guilty pleasure: Watching romantic films when everyone else has gone to bed, and reading when I’m definitely supposed to be working!
Tea or coffee: Coffee.
Favourite song: Always changing but Falling In by Lifehouse is one of my favourites.
Favourite dessert: Banoffee pie or Tiramasu, tricky choice!
Favourite colour: Lime
Favourite television show to knit to: Anything that I know well enough that I don’t need to look up too often. I’ve knitted through the Harry Potter films and the TV series of Sherlock, which my younger daughter loves and I could write the scripts for!
If you could knit for anyone, who would it be, and what would you make? I think it would be great to knit a colourful bobble hat for Mr Darcy from Pride and Prejudice, it would make him into a much more light-hearted character!
Perfect day: My perfect day would be doing anything with my daughters and partner. A relaxing day at home is good. My older daughter is at uni so days when everyone is together are a treat. We moved from a town to the country last summer and after the initial panic of living more than five minutes from a coffee shop I’m enjoying the peace and the challenge of a big garden.
Number of WIPs: I’m really bad at finishing anything so always several things at once. I’m usually designing, doing a bit of knitting and sewing things up all at the same time.
Any knitting disasters: Anything practical goes wrong. There have been a few unravelling sessions over the years. I think the thing to do is have a break and do something else and come back to it later!
