7 Wonderful Knitted Wedding Ideas

7 Wonderful Knitted Wedding Ideas

Weddings are an expensive affair, but us crafty types are always looking for ways to cut cost through our creativity. Handmade items make it even more special and personal, which is just what you want on your big day. We’ve pulled together a selection of inspiring knitting and crochet ideas and designs to help make the biggest day of your life even more memorable!

1.Crochet a cake
As pretty as a picture and gloriously fat free, grab a scrumptious wedding cake pattern from Gourmet Crochet by Christen Haden and Mariarosa Sala (£7.99, The Ivy Press). The book also features four other individual cake designs which would work well for desserts or favours for your guests. All the projects are worked in fine cotton on small hooks but you can easily increase the size of the finished cake by using a chunkier yarn and larger hook. For further details and how to order, call 01273 487440 or visit www.ivypress.co.uk

2. Flower power
Set the scene for your special day with beautiful blooms. There are lots of patterns in books and online so it shouldn’t be too hard to find one for your favourite variety. Create a wedding bouquet, a table centrepiece arrangement or even buttonholes.  You can easily select shades that complement your colour scheme. Head to the flowers category of our free patterns for inspiration.

3. Knitted gifts
If you’re attending a wedding to throw some confetti and celebrate, but don’t have time to knit yourself, why not enlist Laura Long to do it for you? She creates handmade personalised knitted brides and grooms. A fabulous gift for a knitty bride! Check out www.notonthehighstreet.com/lauralong

4. Dress to impress
As every girl will tell you, when it comes to a wedding it’s all about the dress. What better way to make your glorious gown even more special than by knitting it yourself? While there are few dedicated wedding books or patterns still in print, it’s always worth looking in charity shops, the library or searching the internet for past gems. If you can’t quite find the style that’s right for you, try blending elements from different patterns. Start by finding a beautiful bodice design for the top half of the dress, then either search for a long skirt pattern or extend the top to form a dress.

5. Accessorise, accessorise
If the thought of knitting a whole dress is a little too daunting, you can still add a special touch to your wedding ensemble with other knitted garments and accessories. Shawls or boleros can work really well, and they don’t overpower the dress. Openwork patterns would look fantastic over the top of your gown, while light and fluffy mohair yarns could add texture to the outfit. Patterns for other accessories including handbags, long gloves and even wedding garters can all be found online, so get browsing!

6. Delicate lace
For the advanced lace knitter, a lace wedding shawl or veil wedding project would be an exquisite addition to your day. Sharon Miller from Heirloom Knitting adapts shawl patterns from antique traditional Shetland lacework. If you like a challenge, patterns are available to buy through calling 01837 55112 or visiting www.heirloom-knitting.co.uk

7. Sparkle and shine
You don’t just have to use yarn to show off your knitting talents. Suraya Hossain from Mahliqa creates fabulous knitted jewellery using beads and wire. Take a look at her gorgeous range of finished items or grab yourself a knit kit to make your own, www.mahliqa.co.uk
