What you need to know

These fun and fruity DIY patterns make the perfect back-to-school gift.

Funky fruits are all the rage with teens, so knit them this fab purse and pencil case set to keep them on trend. Both are fitted with zips to make them quirky yet practical. They’re easy to knit and the purse features a delightful textured stitch pattern for that bobbly pineapple effect. The pencil case could also double up as a make-up bag!

What do I need?

Yarn: Deramores Studio DK, shades Citrine, Olive, Peony, White, Fir, Ebony, one 100g ball of each
Needles: 3.5mm
Zip: mustard, 8cm; light pink, 15cm
Sewing needle and thread
Tapestry needle

Sizing

Pineapple: 9cm wide x 15cm tall (incl. leaves)
Watermelon: 24cm wide x 11cm deep

Top knit tips

When working (k1, p1, k1) into the same stitch for the pineapple purse, knit the first stitch but keep the original stitch on the left needle. Move the yarn to the front of the work between the needle tips, then purl into the same stitch, again keeping it on the left needle. Move the yarn to the back of the work between the needles, then knit into the same stitch, now dropping the original stitch from the left needle.

It helps to pin and sew the zip in on the wrong side to hide the stitching.
