What you need to know

The perfect pattern for toymaking beginners, it's time to knit Nicola Valiji's pirate doll.

Arrrrr! After sailing the seven seas our ardent explorer has landed on faraway shores and is ready to dig for buried treasure! Joseph, made by Nicola Valiji, loves nothing more than setting his motley crew to work washing the deck while he lays in the shade of a palm tree. Our cheeky pirate is made using basic stitches with little shaping so he’s quick and simple to make.

What do I need?

Yarn: DK yarn, shades Blue, Black, Red, Pink, White, Yellow, Taupe, Lilac, 25g of each
Needles: 3.5mm
Safety toy stuffing
Tapestry needle

Sizing

28cm tall

Top knit tips

Embroider the hair before you sew the hat onto the pirate.

To successfully stuff your knitted toy, it is essential that you tease out your stuffing beforehand. This will prevent unsightly lumps and bumps. Another tip is to take your time. You need to strike the perfect balance between over and under stuffing your project, so don’t be afraid to start again if your toy doesn’t sit right. Finally, you should make use of a smaller needle, as this will help you to reach awkward areas such as the arms and feet.
