What you need to know

Featuring the Fair Isle technique, kids will love wearing Susie John's pinafore dress pattern.

Knitted garments of all kinds are great for toddlers and this cute, practical fit-and-flare dress project is no exception. Featuring a row of little hearts around the hem, it has a ribbed bodice for a snug fit and button fastenings on the shoulders. The hem, which has a decorative picot edge, gives a little weight to the lower edge of the dress, helping it to hang well. It also covers the yarn strands on the wrong side of the work, formed by the Fair Isle heart border, keeping everything nice and neat. Hands up who wants to be four again!

What do I need?

Yarn: Scheepjes Merino Soft DK, shades 632 Degas, 5 (5, 6, 6) 50g balls, 635 Matisse, one 50g ball
Needles: 3mm, 3.75mm
Stitch holder
Buttons: two
Tapestry needle

Sizing

To fit age (approx): 12-18m (18m-2y, 2-3y, 3-4y)
Actual chest (cm): 57 (60, 63, 66)
Length to shoulder (cm): 35 (38, 41, 44)

Top knit tips

Work the size appropriate to the age of the baby or toddler and it should fit even after they have grown a bit because the ribbed bodice is stretchy, and it can work as a tunic, too.

If you want to add a bit more longevity, make the front straps a tad longer so in time you can reposition the buttons.
