What do I need?

Yarn: Jamieson and Smith 2ply Jumper Weight Yarn, shade (A) 123 Heather, four 25g balls; (B) 84 Violet, (C) FC22 Light Heather, (D)1403 Red, (E) 91 Apricot, (F) 23 Primrose, (G) 47 Pine and (H) FC15 Blue, one 25g ball of each
Crochet hook: 5mm
Tapestry needle

Sizing

Before felting: base 32cm diameter, side piece 94 x 29 cm, handles 64 x 4cm each
After felting: bag 62cm diameter x 23cm deep

Top tip

Felting is a great way to strengthen knitting into a fabric strong enough to support your shopping. The magic process relies on the qualities of wool's crepe fibres which fuse together as they crimp up and shrink in the hot wash. Make sure you work any felting project in 100% wool to avoid the disappointment of an unfelted bag at the end of the machine's cycle. You may need to do two washes to achieve the desired effect.
