Stitch dictionary

Slip, slip, knit (ssk): Slip the next stitch on the left needle knitwise, then slip the next stitch on the left needle purlwise. Take the left needle and knit through the front of the two slipped stitches on the right needle.

Top knit tips

The elephant pattern uses ‘short rows’ to make the ears. The wraps and turns prevent holes forming at the ends of the short rows. Purl to the point of the turn, slip the next stitch on the left needle onto the right needle, take the yarn between the needles to the back (knit side), slip the stitch on the right needle back on to the left needle, bring the yarn between the needles to the front (purl side), now turn the work ready to knit the next row. To hide the “bars” that are made when stitches are wrapped, on the purl row, purl the bar and the wrapped stitch together.

Sewing the two side pieces of the elephant together does require a bit of patience to match up the stripes. If you want a quicker toy, you could knit each piece in solid colour.
