I’m all about the stripes!

Despite making a solemn vow to finish the Falling In Love socks that have been sitting on the needles for what could be classed as a lifetime, I have started another project!
In my defence, this is a quick and simple baby hat knit and I haven’t, as yet, made anything for my soon-to-be niece or nephew. (Ahhh I feel fully satisfied in my justification!)
Coming from a family of knitters had left me a pickle as to what to make for this imminent arrival. What do you knit for a new tot whose mother, grandmother and even great-grandmother are all avid - and talented - knitters?
So where does that leave me? I have found the answer in stripes! Granted that is more of a theme than an overall project, but who could resist this adorable Wee Willie Winkie hat in buttery yellow and smoky grey? Certainly not me, I have even found new ways to obsess about all the other striped baby creations I can whizz up over the next couple of months… snuggle suits, bootees, blanket, mittens – when it comes to stripes anything is possible! Dare I say it, I may even master the art of carrying the yarn up the WS of the work without it looking like an tangled knot of spaghetti!
Being part of a family of knit-enthusiasts certainly has it’s ups – I’m not just talking about the panicked telephone calls to find out how to make sense of a cryptic pattern. It’s satisfying to know that hand made gifts are always gratefully received – perhaps it take another yarnaholic to truly appreciate the time, quality of materials and the piece of your heart that you have put into it.

that looks fab, why not do a toy too as the baby can play with that for much much longer?

I recently started knitting baby hats as just for fun, now i’m planning to launch a franchise in my local farmers market. Which seems to be well recieved by my knitting buddys in Wells, Somerset. I have found that if i knit the same hat in the same colour in 5 different sizes and sell them as a pack they won’t grow out of the hat then, they can just swap to the next size up when the other gets to small.

Something I found very interesting about stripes is that it teaches you an amazing amount about colour.
When I have tried see if two colours will go together by putting the yarn balls side by side, it just does not work for some reason/?
BUT, if I knit the two colours in stripes as a swatch - WOW!
Things happen that I would not have believed!
I discovered this when I started knitting a few baby hats for the recent African appeal. The colours of course need to be quite colourful for the African mums - no white or pastels for them.
It turned out to be a very interesting excercise for me and several nice hats for the babies - so, win win!
