I’ve just discovered amigurumi and really want to have a go at making some (I think I have a bag of stuffing somewhere!)
Does anyone have any links to cute free patterns?

Thanks for the links!

They seem like a great way to use up bits of left over yarn.

I have to say, I love those little critters too and I found a great pattern for an Adipose baby (from Dr Who) on Ravelry - the girl who designed it must be a genius!  Anyhoo, I’d love to be able to do it but I can’t even crochet yet (apart from doing a chain!).  Anyone know of any websites where there are instructions in how to do it?  I’m waiting for a book (Super Crochet Wonderful) to come from my craft club but I dunno if that’s gonna have beginners instructions in it.  They kind of all assume that you can already crochet!

Hi Rowena, if it is Mr Funkys Super Crochet Wonderful it is a great book and it does have some directions for beginners but be aware that it is written using American crochet terms, not British. Apart from that it has a lot of reaaly good patterns in it and a lot of them are quite easy for beginners too.

That would probably explain why I can’t figure out most things - I’ve got a book “A to Z of Crochet” and just got “Learn to Crochet” out of the library and this “single crochet” that a lot of these patterns go on about isn’t mentioned at all.  Is that a US term then?

It is that book that I’m getting, yes.  Just waiting for stock to come in.

yes, single crochet is the term that americans use for double crochet, most american books have a conversion chart for british crochet but just checked and Mr Funky doesnt! The easiest way I’ve found to tell if youve got an american pattern is to check the instructions, if it says gauge then its american, if it says tension its British. There is a crochet conversion chart in whisper (simply knitting) but might be one in LK too. If not then they should print one!!! Sounds like we’re in the same book club!

This is in american, but it will show you HOW to do each stitch.

Here is a stitch name conversion chart

US >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> UK
chain(ch) >>>>>>>>>>>>> chain(ch)
single crochet (sc) >>>>>>>> double crochet(dc)
double crochet (dc) >>>>>>> treble (tr)
half double crochet (hdc) >>>>> half treble (htr)
triple crochet (trc) >>>>>>>>>> double treble (dtr)
slip stitch (sl st) >>>>>>>> slip stitch (sl st)

this link converts UK and US knitting needles and crochet hooks >>>>

But thank you for the links grin
