I have not knitted for charity but one of the kniiting mags had a picture of a lad holding a sheep around mothers day, the ad was for World Vision. I went onto their site and saw all the things you could buy to help people in undeveloped countries to aid them to be independant and help themselves. So my Mothers day presents were money to buy clean water, mosquito nets and an area of land for farming. My Birthday gift will be a flock of sheep for a village. The pleasure it gave me was incredible, I did not know what to buy first!
I knit for Romanian children. I pass the clothes and toys on to my neighbour who takes them to her church. They take them out in a tanker annually and the church memebers are shown videos and pictures of the children receiving their parcels. It’s good to know that the items I knit are actually getting to the people who need them.
I don’t believe it’s true that charities don’t help themselves. Oxfam are accepting 9” knitted or crocheted squares at the moment. The details are already in this thread, or you can find them on the Oxfam website.
When I mentioned knitting toys and clothes for a charity I was told that EU legislation made it very difficult to sell stuff so the charity would not take any.
I knit for Loving Hands (http://www.lovinghands.org.uk). They are based in Scotland but donate knitted/crochet/sewn items to various charities. They set challenges every quarter for fun - this time it’s Baby hats, blankets (all sizes!), jumpers for Feed the Children and Preemie cardigans.
I like it because I can knit a variety of items, but only have to send them to one address and it’s in the UK!
I’m a returning knitter - severely out of practice as I haven’t knitted since my gran taught me in my teens - but I saw the item in the new mag about knitting hats for save the children and downloaded the pattern (which actually has diagrams of how to form the stitches!!!) and I am currently on my third hat since Wednesday - I’ve got the bug!!
Hope you’re still going strong with those hats, butterflies! I’m also knitting for Save The Children right now ... so far I’ve knitted two little baby blue hats, have just started a pale green one and I’m going to the wool shop tomorrow to buy some pink wool and any other funky colours I can find to knit some more ...
Got bored after hat number 6 - now have two different preemie projects on the go, a 15” blanket and, more adventurously, a body warmer (cardigan without sleeves for babies with drips in their arms). Found a fab website http://www.bonniebabies.co.uk with loads of free patterns and will probably send my latest projects to them if my local hospital doesn’t want them - be careful reading the “Heaven’s Nursery” section of that website though - I had tears streaming down my face!!!
i think knitting for charity is fantastic and to be commended. I love doing baby items as they are so quick to do. I noticed in this months mag there are details of the hat knitting- will definatly be sending a few their way!!!
