I call it unpicking but it is the Americans who started it because it sounds like a frog when you say it....rippet rippet. And the wool is supposed to make that sound as well. rolleyes

I get the impression that our cousins across the pond think they have dicovered a NEW HOBBY....it is called KNITTING!!!! wink

red face

I was born across the Atlantic but I have been living in east London for over 20 years. I can pass for a native if I keep my mouth shut.

I have no idea why they have to give things silly names in my native land.  I get confused enough trying to work out worsted and sport weight confused

For the record I just call it ripping back.

From the tone of your posts I don’t think you have been offended but I suspect that after 20 years you know what we are like over here anyway cheese  I reckon it is the new younger generation of knitters who have coined the “rippets” It is a question that comes up often in magazines and on forums but it does not come to me readily. Too old to change probably tongue laugh tongue laugh
Glad you decided to stay here anyway!!!! wink

I seem to be getting better at ‘undoing’ stuff, at one time, would ignore it red face unless really drastic, but now it annoys me so I undo it !

Talking of our oversea cousins, my Mum was very offended when she went over to stay with my brother and his wife who emigrated to Canada, the word ‘fanny’ was not taken well, and also, using the word ‘p**s for going to the loo, and I also remember a friend of mine going to America and working in an office shouted, “Does anyone have a rubber “ which met with howls of laughter red face x Janet

i worked with an irish girl before and they used the word ‘fanny’ in a gentle jibing manner, but def not meaning anything offenceive.  the whole place went quiet one day when a customer calling to report her 3rd lost bank card in a month and feeling really bad about being careless was told ‘not to worry about it, we can all be a fanny at times’ - luckily the customer saw the funny side after the supervisor explained, and a BIG sign was put up reminding us all how to talk to customers
