I wondered if anyone on here could help me.
I am off to the USA in September.
I am what I call a plain knitter - I usually knit plain stuff and toys.
I have the opportunity to buy yarn in the US but I really dont know what to look for.
Do any of you have any ideas as to what would be a good bargain to bring home.
Any tips would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks all

No not a clue I’m afraid.  Maybe you could find some wool you like here that you can easily get, price it up here and just see if it’s cheaper there?  Or visit a few US websites to see if anything gets your creative juices flowing.  Sorry couldn’t be of more help.  Sure someone will be along soon who will be of more assistance!

Thank you for the reply.
I have just looked on Ravelry and Cascade seems to be a popular yarn.
I am going to see if there is any available here and what price it is.

In the back of LK there is a table translating US yarn weights into English so you could at least get half a clue what type of yarn it was.  If it was me I would just buy whatever took my fancy and sort it out when I got home, although I would probably ask about it in the shop too.

Whereabouts in the USA are you going to as that might affect your choice of yarn?

I’ve seen Sugar’N’Spice yarn mentioned a lot, also Lion Brand.

Have a look at JoAnn’s (http://www.joann.com) and Michaels (http://www.michaels.com) websites as these are craft suppliers with stores all over the US - maybe there’ll be one near where you’re staying?

I have just been looking at SugarNSpice.

Knitpicks you can only order online, they dont have a shop or
anything.

There’s also Red Heart yarns which I think are the more acrylic stuff.  Definitely Cascade if you want 100% wool.  And Lion Brand seems to be popular for toys.

Places like Walmart usually have a crafts section with things like wool, fabric, embroidery stuff etc so just have a look round there and see what’s what.  You can always ask someone there what the most popular yarns are.

Thanks for helping everyone.
I would like some 100% wool so Cascade would be perfect for that.

I am also going to investigate Lion Brand,
I just need to travel light now, and make plenty of room in my suitcase for what I bring home.

Travelling light is a good idea!  I went to Canada a year or so back and spent $800 on quilting fabric - I needed to buy an extra bag to bring it home!  So my advice?  Take a spare bag with you!

Or post it to yourself before you return! I hate paying extra baggage charges and often do up a box the day we leave and just post it!

I would check out the local yarn shops where you are going as they will carry more unusual stuff, possibly alpaca or quiviut and you might be able to treat yourself to a luxury yarn to make a scarf, something that you wouldn’t be able to get elsewhere.

Where are you off to?

We are travelling from Seattle to Yellowstone Park in Wyoming.
We have 2 stop offs along the way.  But obviously there is nothing in the Yellowstone Park area.
Our first stop off does have one though, and of course there is Wal-mart, always worth a look.

Thankyou that was a very nice thought, but unfortunately I only land at Seattle - Tacoma Airport.  Our first night is spent 120 miles away.
If I do get chance on our return journey, I will investigate.
Thanks again for the links.
