Let's Knit Magazine - Your knitting, your style

I am having a bit of a problem knitting a string type bag, you start off on 6.5mm, knit a bit, then have to change to 20mm, this is where the problems start, because I am using Patons 100% Cotton DK, which doesnt stretch, making it blooming hard (nigh impossible to me) to get the stitches from 6.5 to 20mm, have tried but they all fell off the needle, and have tried doing it on a bigger size than 6.5, but took ages, and STILL slipped off the needles! There must be a way of doing it, as the pattern has been knitted by someone to print it in the mag!! There is probably a simple solution, but I cant seem to find it!!! Here’s hoping! 

The solution is in your tension.
Or go to the shop and buy a strong jute bag
The Sue Ryder charity has a smashing bag with a little yellow man attached. Ideal for wool and stuff.

I had hoped to make these for Christmas, maybe it would be easier to buy the ones you mentioned, and help out at the same time!! Will take the yarn away, all my needles coming anyway, so will have a go in the peace!! Will try and knit looser!!

The only solution I can think of is going up more gradually… Maybe up to 8mm, for a row, then 10mm etc?

It may be simpler to slip the knit stitch to the larger needle (when it has the working thread on it and you can make the loop as bit as you need) and then bring the yarn forward and pass the stitch over.  Difficult to explain without having it (and you!) in front of me.  Or you could do it with a crochet hook and then just slip the loops onto the big needle as you make them.

Hope that helps and that I explained properly - can see it in my mind but having difficulty putting it into words!

Thanks Missroyalcake and Sash2! Will have a go eventually, and if all else fails, will buy some bags!! Can always use the yarn on something else!!

I have done it and did not have a problem.When I changed to 20mm needles the stitches looked a bit funny but hold the yarn tight and when you have knitted a couple of rows they fall into place.I did have a problem weith stitches falling off end of 20mm needle but my partner cut a cardboard disc to go over end of needle which stopped them falling off.I knitted 2 strands different yarns and am not an experienced knitter so please persevere.It makes brilliant carrier bag holder and I am knitting 2 more as motorbike helmet covers.If you still stuck get back to me cos I am not 100 per cent what you mean.Waggel
