In Issue 5 of Let’s Knit I read about the 2008 Knitting Olympics on page 52; Item No: 2 on the 18 Ways to Challenge Yourself article.

Basically, the aim of the game is to cast on a project at the start of the Olympics Opening ceremony (which is today 08.08.08 in fact - not 04.08.08 mentioned in the mag - oops!) and finish it before the Olympic flame goes out.

I have decided to take up the Challenge and for my project, I am going to make “candy” (Issue 5, Let’s Knit, page 12).  I even ordered the exact wool specified - looky me, I’m now a knit junkie ordering on line.  I couldn’t find the buttons so I’ll be sorting those out at the end.

So, wish me luck!  I will try to post a pic of the finished product (if i remember) cheese

Well, I’m off to continue with my Olympics project.
ciao for now,

Neon x

OOooh, wonder if I could start and finish my socks.  I’m sat here watching the opening ceremony right now.  There has been some spectacular sights - not sure my socks will live up to it though lol

Good Luck, Neon.

Good luck.  I’ve already got 3 projects on the go so I won’t be starting another one just yet.  I know I said I only start one at a time, but I was in bed poorly and couldn’t walk downstairs to get my knitting so went next door and got a pattern and some wool from my stash.  I also keep a project at work now because it’s so slow over the school holidays.

I’ve just frogged compote, my sleeveless cardi completely, will that count as I’m starting it all over again? Wasn’t happy at how thick it was knitting up and being an idiot I did think twice before I cast on but did it anyway. I had nearly finished I just had the edges to do but it didn’t hang right and came up far too short. I’ve redone the rib this afternoon and I’m already happier with it. I’m knitting the smaller size on bigger needles.

good luck Neon! I enjoyed knitting Candy, its the buttons that make it special.
I hope I get passionflower finished by the end of the Olympics, I feel more like the flame carrier though… still trotting along!

I didn’t know about this but I did start a new project yesterday. Daughter wants a shrug in fluffy wool so I started that. My cardigan is on the back burner again!

I’ve just cast on a sock for Aston.  Shouldn’t take too long to make a pair for such little feet! grin So that’s my project for the Knitting Olympics.  Still doing the Topsy-Turvy dolls though but it’s nice to chop and change! LOL

Not quite finished the 2nd sock yet but I’m working on getting it done today.  Need to go and have a bath and then I’ll strap my new gloves on and get knitting!

Can you let me know how you get on with the gloves please Rowena as No1 is taking an interest with her having similar problems. She does a lot of typing at work and has been using a Arnica Gel. That seems to be helping a bit but she wondered if the gloves might be a bit restricting.

The only thing I’ve noticed with them is that you need to wear them a couple of times for short periods to get them to be comfortable on your hands.  The latex-esque stuff they use to make the hand part has to be fairly snug or it doesn’t provide enough support.  The wrist part has a velcro fastening extra support that gives you a little boost on the fabric part - you can obviously have it just fitting round your wrist or that little bit tighter for a bit of extra support.  I get a lot of pain in my left wrist so this is very useful for me.

I’m not having any trouble typing with them on because you still have a full range of movement in your fingers, unlike with my other wrists supports which have a metal bar in to immobilise the hand.

The first couple of times I had them on yesterday, the tips of my thumbs went numb but that went off after the gloves ‘stretched’ a bit and I’d done a few exercises with my hands to wake the nerves up!

I would definitely recommend them for people who have RSI, Carpel Tunnel etc.  And you can still put some pain relief gel or whatever on your skin before you put them on (I’ve discovered that a bit of Deep Heat rubbed into my hands and wrists at night before I put on my supports with the metal in does WONDERS!)

Hope it helps Gill!

Thank you Rowena, No1 is here and found it very interesting, she thinks that her hands would get too hot in them, but possibly winter time they would help. Her bones hurt a lot of the time but she finds that the Arnica Gel is helping a lot as it is keeping her cool because sometimes she feels as if her hands and wrists are on fire. She is very grateful for your info though, as it is only when you know from others that you find out these things, so thank you and we hope you have success with the gloves. No1 would like to know how you get on over the next couple of months so if you can keep us posted that will be great. smile
