Hi Everyone!

I’m attempting my first sock and am having trouble doing the heel - can anyone help?!

Here’s the link again to the pattern I’m using

http://www.theknittinggoddess.co.uk/page34.htm

With the Heel instructions:
Turn heel : Next row (WS) sl 1, p 18, p2tog, p1 turn Next row : s1, k7, ssk, k1, turn Next row : s1, p8, p2tog, p1, turn Next row : s1, k9, ssk, k1 turn Next row : sl, p10, p2tog, p1, turn Continue in this way increasing number of stitches before each decrease until 20 sts remain (last row will be knitted).

what does it mean ‘continue in this way increasing number of stitches before each decrease until...’

Would the row after the third be: sl, k11, ssk, k1 turn then sl, p12, p2tog, p1?

How am I meant to know what to do?

Thanking you all in advance!

Wello! Sock nutter,sorry knitter, here!

Yes, each row you will be adding 1 to the knitted/purled bit in the middle between the shaping until you have used up all the stitches on the sock flap.

Hope that helps!

Thank you! I’m loving this site. I bought the magazine for the first time last night and fell in love with it!

Just need to get my head around these socks - despite all the trouble - this will be my 3rd attempt at the heel - I’m enjoying knitting on four needles!

Warning - they are addictive!!!  I’ve done about 20 pairs now!  I still find the four needles a bit fiddly at times, particularly casting on, but they are fun and veryportable.

Hi,

Sadly, I too do socks.  The first one was the hardest to do but once you get the hang of it there’s no going back, and shop bought ones are soooo not the same.  I’m half way through a pair at the moment but had to knit a teddy for the new puppy we’re getting in a couple of weeks, then I had to knit the silk shawl with the big needles, then an amigurumi book arrived so I had to crochet a turtle.  Too little time… wink

Hello knittingham.  I have done one and a half pairs so far and as they say they are addictive!  Sorry couldn’t help with your heel, mine was done differently!

Socks are indeed addictive.  I’ve now got 3 sets of DPNs (and there are more free ones in the next issue of LK!) and the only reason I’m not knitting socks right this minute is cuz I’ve got far too many things that need finishing and I’m also trying to do some Jean Greenhowe toys for my nieces for xmas.  I’m gagging to knit some cute little socks for my son though!  And more for me!

I’ve got the dpns and I’ve got the patterns but, like you say, it’s finding the time what with all the other wee projects that are on the go at the same time.
I’ve only tried a sock once but it was on ordinary needles and had a seam up the sole of the foot!  Rubbish!
It ended up twice the size it should’ve been and the seam was uncomfortable. Needless to say I didn’t make the other half.
Looking forward to trying a proper pattern on dpns though. The heel challenge sounds good.
Getting close to finishing the cardigan I’m working on so everything else has taken a bit of a back seat for the moment so I can try and get this finished over the next couple of weeks.
Then I can join sock knitters club and even a sock-a-long, which always sounds intriguing.

tongue laugh Socks are fun!  And if you have “orphan” socks, you can use them for glove puppets, christmas decorations and I’ve seen them used as money boxes as well!

Have fun!

Righto! Got another questions for you sock enthusiasts! Do I have to use sock yarn? The pattern I’m following is for 4 ply - so can I use any 4 ply or do I have to use specific 4 ply sock yarn? I’ve seen some 4 ply merino wool - that would be alright wouldn’t it? It’s just a few of the online shops have 4 ply and then a sub heading for 4 ply sock yarn....

I’ve finished two pairs and have about 30 sock patterns downloaded which I’m itching to try.  I also have 4 lots of sock yarn to choose from, calling from my stash.  “Knit me, knit me, I want to be Rivendell socks”.

http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/rivendell-sock

I think the method Knittingham describes is the short row heel method?  That’s the only one I’ve tried so far.

That’s what I love about socks, there’s so many ways they can be knitted, toe up, top down, eye of partridge hell, short row heel. afterthought heel…
