I want to knit scarves for my daughter and her friends for christmas but will have to buy the yarn online as LYS thinks world begins and ends with cheap acrylic (it’s primarily a sewing shop and I’ve never seen anybody knit in there so maybe they don’t know any better).  The downside of this is not being able to feel the yarn first, so I need your recommendations.

I’m looking for something very soft but not fluffy or scratchy that can be machine washed, preferably in pink or lilac without being overly baby-pastel if you know what I mean!!  DK weight please.

My pattern has a diagonal lacy effect so the yarn needs to be solid colour or denim/tweed effect - variegated just makes the scarf too busy from what I’ve seen of other people’s FOs on Ravelry.

The girls are only 5 so I will be re-sizing the pattern and hoping to do each one with 1 skein and looking to spend about £5.00 per scarf.

Any ideas?

Hi
I like cotton yarn and there are some nice colours on ebay at the moment though tends to be expensive so you will have to shop carefully.I knitted a nice scarf in cotton but not having had kids not sure if will be too thick for them.If you get normal dk wool go for a good make such as Sirdar.I think you never go wrong with their yarn and feels much better than cheap dk you get from pound shops that some wool shops to my disgust also sell at a much higher price.Hope this helps as you say it is hard to recommend if you can’t feel it.I also scour charity shops.Have you any near you.It is luck what you get as minute it comes in shop people will buy it.Good Luck.Waggel

SIRDAR SNUGGLY for 5year olds definitely. It is lovely to knit with and very soft. I would not recommend cotton for a cosy scarf though. But that is a personal choice.

Sublime do a lovely cashmere silk wool (or something like that!) mix that is really lovely to the touch and comes in a good range of colours.  It’s also smooth and double knit so shows a pattern really nicely.  Also, Rowan silk wool feels nice too, and also comes in some lovely colours.

Hope this helps.

I’ve used Sirdar fizz for kiddie scarves, softer than the funky fur and eyelash wools but a similar effect. I got it for around 69p a ball from kemps.
