hey all

Ok so im knitting the sweater in this months lk at the very back the one in green, but when i cast it off it looks too tight, i’ve tried to get my hands on bigger needles but the ladies in the yarn shop said the only size available after 15 mm was 20 mm and they looked way too big, I tried to unravel it and cast it off looser but ended up ruining it and having to throw it away and i’m very cross cos it was knitted perfectly up until the casting off bit!

so, i just wanted to ask if anyone has any tips or advice as to how to make the casting off a bit looser?

I will try it again and remember to try and make it less tight but i’ve tried that before and it didnt work the only way around it was bigger needles! I’m in a muddle now! shut eye

aaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

DON’T throw out ANYTHING in a rush. There is always some way to rescue stuff.  shock
You could have just undone the last row and sewn it up to make a bag, felted perhaps. Or, unravel carefully and reuse the wool for something else. Oh well, you learn by your mistakes. tongue wink I hope the wool was not VERY expensive????

sob.. but there was no saving it, I did try to rescue it but ended up making it worse and then there really was no saving it.. next time i’ll know just to leave it alone !

as for how expensive it was you dont want to know.. ! :-( I had to go and get more when i was searching for the needles, thankfully, they had more because if they didn’t I would have been very cross altogether!

If you can manage to learn basic crochet, next time try crochet casting off. You might have to find someone to help show you but it could solve your problem.

I dont think i’ll ever learn to crochet! lol but last night I knitted the back up again and tried to cast off very very very loosely.. I was thinking this is never going to look right but it does look better!

now the only thing that bothers me is the little gap i’ve noticed between the part that had stiches on a holder and the other shoulder bit that was on the needle, i’m sure I didnt loose a stich so why the little hole? grr! shut eye

You should have given the sts a little bit of a tug to bring them together.

I have been in 4 different wool shops today and all said the same....No 16mm the needles go from 15mm to 20mm, there are none in between. The only thing I can suggest is practise ..practise and then practise some more grin and try to learn some basic crochet and cast off that way.

When the stiches were on the needles and i was putting them on the holder there always seems to be a gap between the ones on the holder and the ones on the needle, I know for sure I didnt drop any stiches, and no matter how much i tug the yarn the little gap is still there! Maybe i’m doing something wrong when i’m putting them on the holder I dont know downer same thing happened with the front .. i think I can probably tighten them up by sewing it at the back or something…

Thank you very much for looking for me smile I have been practicing and if I cast off really loosely it looks fine, took a few goes to get it right but at least I know now always to cast off loosely!

You could try holding 2 needles together. Say one 15mm and a thinner one to make the sts a bit bigger.
