Yesterday I mentioned how helpful some info on making up an item would be, and low and behold when I open my new LK mag which I got today, there were the instructions with great pictures at the back of the book. Thank you LK. (Spooky or what!!!! big surprise) but my question is when do you use the mattress stitch or the back stitch?  I have always over sewn my seams!!

I use mattress as I think it is neater but a lot depends on the thickness of your wool.

I use different sewing up methods depending on the wool...or cotton I’m knitting with.

I oversew on the shoulders and when putting the sleeves on (don’t like backstitch much) and use mattress stitch for the side seams.  Using mattress stitch is fairly recent though as I always used to oversew everything - much faster.

I think if it looks neat and you’re happy using it, go for it!

I always oversew unless its really thick wool when I backstitch. I keep meaning to try matress stitch but I always forget when I come to sewing up.

must try matress stitch on my next big thing.  The socks only (oops sorry I said the word!!!) call for grafting!  Nearly finished them and they aren’t bad for a first try even if I say so myself!!! red face
