Would it be possible to print the measurements on a pattern in ‘old’ imperial as well as metric ? I don’t do metric very well, and to be honest 16 cm means nothing to me, now put 9 inches and I can visulise that, is is annoying to have to get a tape measure out to see how close it is, a lot of patterns (sirdar for instance ) do both,
Does anyone else agree ? x Janet (PS I am not in my eighties either!!)
Many many years ago when metric was rearing it’s ugly head, I bought some scales, the proper ones with weights, so I got metric weights, and have used them, and I KNOW that 100gms is 4oz etc,but a lot of recipes still do both sets, but measurements I just can’t do with, all I KNOW is 2.5 cm to and inch, which doesn’t help me at all, and that a metre is 3’ 3” ditto, anyway glad I am not on my own, perhaps things might change I know you younger gals have grown up with metric, but I reckon there is at least another good few years or so to go before all the ‘imperialists’ are dead and buried x Janet
Hi
I hate metric as well, bet before long we will have the Euro money as well, that should be fun!!!!!!! what gets me on knitting patterns as well is the sizes I have one at the moment that says chest measures 22inch, but actual chest measurment think it was 78 centimetres.

I, for one, was not planning to go just yet!!!!!!!!!!!
I’m 34 and was educated exclusively in metric but because I spent a lot of my childhood helping my Mum and Dad who did everything in imperial (baking, carpetry, etc, etc, etc) all my early practical experience was imperial.
To be honest I’ve switched to metric for baking but almost everything else I prefer to use imperial.
It is so confusing...like Janet my metric scales tell me 100gms is 4ozs but another metric table I got from my butcher says that 1oz is 28gms....so that differs from my scales. I still ask the butcher for 1lb mince or in the sweet shop 1/4 of whatever....and I can’t see me changing...when buying fabric I can manage metres...and with my knitting I can cope with centimetres as all the patterns now are measured metric....but it is so confusing for us grannies.
We’re all working computers and posting pictures etc...yet this metric stuff still gets to us....
So clever I thought I had lost all my photos from my file tonight Gill...I went into the pic file and it was empty but a few minutes later when I tried it...they were all back in it....dear only knows what had happened. I think I need an early night. Trouble is..I don’t take a lot of sleep and would be up by 3am. Hope your weekend is going well. Bill was on a twelve hour shift today and is the same tomorrow....he’s paying for his time off last weekend when we were in your neck of the woods...poor man. He’s counting down the days now till he finishes for good.
I dont understand it,i leave Andy to work it out for me,i was c@@p at maths at school and it has not changed.metric, ounces you name it my mind goes blank.
