Let's Knit Magazine - Your knitting, your style

Nicky...it’s nice that you are having the this time with the boys even though you find it a bit tight just now with money.  You are being rewarded so much more and things will work out in time.  When my son was born thirty two years ago I decided to stay home and not go back to work although things were a bit different then with the rules of returning to work...but I decided I might look for a part time job after he went to school but it didn’ work out the way I planned as Joe my late husband who was a paramedic had so much training and courses to go on I decided against looking for a job.  On hind site looking back I think it must have been meant to be that way becasue when Joe died so suddenly when Steven was 10 I was so glad that I had been at home full time for those years and I have always felt that I had had more time for both Steven and Joe by being at home.  So...Nicky your time will come ...just enjoy your wee ones and the older two and hubby...money is not everything...I can say that from experience.

I started knitting when i was 16 my dad had just died and i was very upset,a lady called Helen learnt me to keep my mind occuppied,boy am i glad she taught me i have been knitting since,the boys are grown up now and dont want knitted jumpers but hubby does he wants a spongebob one.Knitting also helps with my depression and my Epilepsy which i have had since i was 9 years old,it is under control.Without knitting i would not know what to do.

My Mam taught me when I was 10 been knitting on and of since then. Why do I knit?? Don’t know I just do.

I don’t understand why people DON’T knit!

First off, I love being creative, and not much gives you so much opportunity. You can experiment with absolutely every aspect of a three-dimensional object - colour, texture, size, shape.

Secondly, it’s so relaxing. Once you’re at the point where it comes naturally to you (which doesn’t take long - I’ve only been knitting in earnest for a matter of months) and you get into the rythm, it’s so calming.

Then there’s the challenge. I’m sure everyone loves the feeling of ‘yeah, that was difficult, but I did it’. As I said, I’ve only been knitting in earnest for a few months - actually, since the first issue of LK - so I’m really enjoying playing with lots of different techniques and getting my head round them.

Oh, and a hundred other reasons, but I could be here all day…

even when I wasn’t a knitter I would be drawn to wool shops because of the gorgeous colours and textures. I like colour, I dont wear black at all ( well, shoes & boots but that doesn’t count). I always appreciated the clothes that my gran made for me , they always fitted better and felt nicer to the touch.
Now I’m learning to knit because I think its a fascinating process , that lines can be looped millions of times to make something to wear. I like the feelof the yarn in my hands, I like doing something positive and creative.

I knit for many reasons. It helps me to relax and unwind - I work part time as a dyslexia tutor and often whilst working I think about what I’ll be knitting that night and feel the stress lifting.

I also love creating something lovely both for myself and other people. I love it when friends see my hat, bag etc and ask if I’ll make them one too.

Above all, it’s something for ME.

I learned to knit when i was about ten years old in school, I hadnt picked up the needles in aages and one day my partner suggested I take up a hobby which will help me to quit smoking! And so I took up knitting! I love it… its something creative yet relaxing and there’s nothing like finishing something and knowing that you created it!

I learnt to knit when I was young, both my Nan and my Mom knitted, I did a bit years ago, but then when my daughter became pregnant thought I would have another go, I knew my Nans knitting bag and needles were somewhere, so when I found them I gave it a go, I was amazed how quickly it all came back to me, I also gave up smoking, one reason being, I ‘forgot’ to smoke while I was knitting !! It’s lovely seeing a few stitches turn into something to be proud of, I have taught my stepdaughter to knit and she is as addicted now as well, I will look forward to teaching my youngest GD too, when she is a bit older, (she’s only 8 months) x Janet

Gill get your DIL to come and help clean up after those workmen, back down on all fours scrubbing should get her started nicely. If by any chance they are nice hunky workmen all the better.
Actually I’ve just remembered when I was very heavily pregnant with Max we had the conservatory built, they started it literally two weeks before my due date. The first lot of builders we had were hopeless, they let us down from the word go, they turned up late etc etc, anyway we complained and they sent a new builder in on my birthday and gosh was he georgous, good job hubby had already left work when he turned up as he would not have left me alone with him hugely preggers or not. I had great delight in telling everyone who came to visit me that day that he was my birthday pressie from the conservatory company to make up for all the c*@p they had saddled us with. It was also a very very hot June four years ago so I was able to gawp very discreetly at his half naked body. Still had to wait another 8 days before I went into labour though.

ooooooo.....you naughty girl!!!!!!  I like you!!!!!!

I would love to know why knitters actually knit. They say knitting is the new yoga but I am not convinced-I think some people want to produce an original handmade garment and others like the social scene around it.
Here at LK towers we’re finding out more about our readers but one thing strikes me-they knit for all kinds of reasons-so come on-why do you knit?

I feel like I have always been a knitter as I was taught at a very early age. Gave it up for a couple of years then went back to knitting when i gave up smoking 5 years back.
