Let's Knit Magazine - Your knitting, your style

Hi guys, just wanted to ask any of you out there if you have had a similar problem.  I fly regularly (I know bad for carbon footprint but charity I work for can’t afford the train!!) so I invested in some denise needles, I have 2 probs with them - 1. I haven’t yet found the airline that will let me have them in my hand luggage!! and 2.  My sizing has gone bit off since buying them so finally decided to check them on gauge and they are a size out , too big.

i can work around this as I love working with them, they are light and the circular formation means less weight on my shoulders as like many knitters/sewers of a certain age I have shoulder probs!!  apologies for sad old bagness!!

i think you have to check with individual airlines and airports as to what is acceptable and it can vary a lot.

How about trying crochet instead????? Should not be a problem with airlines and crochet hooks surely????

I checked with the check in desk at Gatwick on Friday morning about knitting needles and crochet hooks and neither can be taken in hand baggage.  I wondered about crochet hooks but these are still seen as a dangerous weapon - as are tweezers for goodness sake!

Airlines are crazy these days, I wouldnt even bother asking them if I can bring needles or crothet hooks in my handluggage, last time we went to greece they were going to take a small bottle of perfume that I had in my handluggage.. the security guards were speaking in greek and my boyfriend is greek and was telling me what they were saying.. i was like hey no thats UNDER the limit!!!!grrr and it was packaged properly! If you decide to chance it you risk them being taken so if I were you i’d just put them in my checked in suitcase!

hi yes I’ve done crochet but only wiv plastic hook! and only to america and back, its in europe they seem to be funny.  I’ve also done french knitting, (knitting nancy) wiv a plastic stick same size as the sticks for denise needles and that was ok but I didn’t mention word knitting just showed her the knitting nancy!!  Its mad I know.

p.s. my daughter has had eyelash curlers taken off her!!!  Can you curl someone’s eyelashes in a threatening manner!!

My friend has long hair - she pinned it up and stuck 2 pointy ended rods through it. On board she took them out of her hair, stuck pencil rubbers on the ends and knitted with them!!!

well i shall be going on hol tomorrw and my needles are in the suit case!!

I have never flown (to scared to)my sister Jo flies from Turkey to come and see us in england,she always brings her knitting needles.

I’m flying to the US in the summer with United and emailed them re knitting needles on the flight. They said yes I could, however apparently it is up to airport security so you could find yourself taking it then some official person at the gate says NO and they can confiscate it. People suggest taking a pre paid envelope but how could it be posted?? So I will probably pack my knitting in my suitcase to take when I go see my brother.
