Hi Janet, Ravelry is a huge online knitting and crochet community, it is USA based but global in members. It sounds exclusive because you have to apply to join but thats because they started off very small and I think grew at a phenominal speed so they have to limit the intake of members so that the whole thing doesn’t crash, although they are suppose to be opening up to everyone in the near future.
When you join iy’s like you aquire an online journal for everything to do with knitting. You can list all your projects, yarn stash what equipment needles etc you’ve got. People list patterns and allsorts of info they trade and swap yarns etc, theres groups you can join for specfic things that may interest you for instance theres a Lets Knit group on there, a british knitters group, groups for people into spinning, dyeing or even just because they all like a certain celebrity or film!! There are dozens of forums for sorts of topics. Theres loads of free patterns available and the point of listing your stash and needles etc is so you can hunt for projects in order to use them. You get to nose at what other people have done/or are doing.
Basically it is huge and if your looking for something you will almost certainly find it on there or someone at least who can tell you where.
I suppose in comparison terms this LK forum is a little hamlet (but very friendly because of it) and ravelry is New York you loose a lot of the personal touch but the variety is enormous.

Ravely is a huge site...world wide Janet and there is such a lot of stuff on it.  I have only been a member for a few weeks and have managed to put some of my stuff on now but it takes time.  If you click on any of us who have Ravelry ID’s on the forum you will see some of it but you have to be a member to go throught the whole site.  When I applied my invitation to join came quite quickly so if you apply I don’t think it will take long for yours to come through.

I had never heard of it either until I came on here.

Thanks Nessa, I was a little worried I hadn’t made much sense.
Janet I waited a little under two weeks and then nearly missed my invite because it went into my junk mail!! It is worth the wait honestly. You can add friends onto your notebook, me, Nessa, Cheryl, Suse are all friends on there so if you find something really good you can share it.
You’ll like this Gill, yesterday looking at one of the ladies pages who was at the meeting on Tues, had a knitted boob cushion on her completed project list. I told her I’d like to knit one for hubby so when I’m sat up knitting after he’s gone to bed he can snuggle up to it and stop nagging me about having to go to bed on his own!!!!

good answer Nicky! Ravelry is a great resource, but coming on here is like chatting to your friends in your own home, more personal and cosy.

I like Ravelry for the yarn search. If I see some cheap yarn, I go and see what I can knit with it and if there’s enough for the project.

Or, a pattern search. I see a pattern I like - what’s it been knitted in by different people, what looks good, what’s available etc

Plus I appear to have joined a local circle and we are having our first meet this weekend.

So there’s quite a lot to it really

Mark looked at me like I had gone stark raving mad when I asked if he wanted one.
Ali said hers was a little worse for wear now as it was a few years old, perfect I said it would resemble me all the more!!! She’s knitting her hubby a new one for his birthday.
