Hey everyone,

Ok so I’ve decided to try and move on to something “proper” i’m sick of socks, so I found what looks like an easy pattern for a v neck top online, the pattern itself looks fine but making it up at the end makes no sense to me, if i could visualise it i’d be fine… can anyone help with making it up? I know i’m probably being stupid here but i’ve read over and over it and it doesnt make any sense and I dont want to knit it and then not be able to put it together!!

Or if anyone can suggest somewhere where I can get a similarly easy pattern that would be appreciated too.. see I can’t do all the fancy stitches that are in most tops in magazines so I thought i’d start with this one…

The pattern is as follows:

NOTE
The top is worked from front to back and made in two halves joined to form centre front/back seams and side seams, in which gaps are left to form the neck and the armholes.

FRONT/BACK
(make 2)
With 33⁄4mm needles, cast on 56(62:68:74) sts. 1st row (RS) P1, k1, [p1, k2] to last 3 sts, p1, k1, p1. 2nd row P.  These 2 rows form the patt and are repeated throughout. Cont in patt until front/back measures 102(106:112:120)cm, ending with a RS row. Cast off knitwise.

TO MAKE UP
Place markers 26cm from cast on and cast off edges on left hand side of one piece and on right hand side of the other piece. To form centre seams, join one piece to the other from cast on edges to first marker and from cast off edges to second marker, so leaving 50(54:60:68)cm open between markers. To form side seams, fold pieces along shoulder line and join seam, leaving approximately 18cm open for armholes. As there is no shaping and the seams are joined from the lower edge upwards, all these measurements can be adjusted to fit your needs.

Ps: ive included a pic below of what its meant to look like…

Sorry to bother you with what probably is simple!

Ok I do get it but not sure how much sense I will make trying to explain it.
You are knitting basically two rectangles/oblongs of rib that are the same shape and width.
The way you sew them up actually shapes the garment very simply but cleverly.  The one set of seams will be up the middle of the front and down the middle of the back with a large gap in the middle which creates the neckline. So it will be a little bit like a poncho type effect. But with a poncho this is how you would wear it.
Then you sew up the side seams but again leave gaps in the middle wear your arms will go through. I have just improvised with two peices of loo roll, place them folded in two side by side. Folded edge at the top. now pull them slightly apart at the top to give the v neck shape. Then just join the sides to create side seams.
Does it make sense now????

One is the sizing, you need to be carefull as peeps were smaller but vintage these days seems to start in the 70s. The fitting is different too. More of raglan for sleeves etc. Shaping is also different. Apart from that....not much!!!!
