the first thing I knitted will have been when i was about 8 at school. We were all taught to knit squares in garter stitch, and I struggled and struggled with it. My little hands were hot and sweaty and i’m sure the yarn became very very grubby. The squares were joined together to make a blanket to send to an african orphanage and I can only assume the teacher frogged mine and reknit it, because it looked quite good at that stage.
A few years later( at about 14) my gran taught me to knit. my hnds were less sticky and I managed to do it but without much enjoyment.
When i was about 19 a magazine in weekly parts came out and I got the first few issues and relearnt kniiting and crochet and I made a hot-water bottle cover and pan holders for the kitchen, then I got bored and put the stuff away.
A couple of years ago my daughter got a teddy bear from the bear factory and wanted some extra clothes for it so I cadged some needles and oddments of wool from my MIL and sort of made a loose jacket for it,
but then the bug really caught last year when Lets knit came out. I’d been getting Lets make cards and the company offered me a low cost trial ( 3 issues for a £1) and I was hooked ( or stitched, if you prefer). Now I see the point of knitting and almost regret the lost years.
I hope the african orphanage benefitted from my first awful attempt!
