I have a pattern for a baby blanket knitted in Red Hearts Baby Cloud yarn which is a super bulky baby yarn.  I can’t seem to find it over here and I really don’t want to send to the US for it, does anyone know of a suitable alternative.

Thanks

HI Orchid...welcome to the forum.  I think your yarn is American and comes under Super Bulky which might beSuper chunky here.  The American needle size is 15 and our equivalent to that would be 10mm or 000 in old sizes.  Hope this might be of some help.
I hope you enjoy the forum and no doubt others will come by to answer your queries as well....we’re a friendly bunch smile

According to my incredibly useful new “Knitspeak” book, Super Bulky is anything that knits on 8mm or larger needles and the best way to substitute a yarn is to choose one with the same ‘gauge’ (i.e. tension square) on the label.  Something that’s about 8 stitches to 10cm is what you want - Rowan Big Wool is about that but not exactly what you want for a baby item.  Sirdar Wow also looks like it’s the same gauge but states smaller needles… hmmm…

Other suggestions:
Stylecraft Alpine Super Chunky
Sirdar Denim Ultra
Twilleys Freedom (more stitches to the 10cm but on 10mm needles)

If you have a LYS, go in there and tell them you’re after a similar weight wool and hopefully they can steer you in the right direction!

BTW, I don’t profess to know much about this - just been doing a comparison on the interweb! lol

Sirdar Snowflake Glacier Ultra light super chunky 8mm needles is this what you are looking for? Check out E-bay. if it is you could help me as I have this wool and don’t know what to knit with it. What colour were you doing? This is a torquise (lot057) and if it will let you finish your blanket you are welcome to it. I think I have about eight balls, but not to sure.

I don’t think I would use a bulky yarn for baby stuff, even blankets. Aran is OK but that is MY opinion, it is up to personal choice. You can get BABY chunky but don’t know what it is called. Sirdar do one I think.

this is a fabulous yarn it feels like a cloud so soft and fluffy but not the type that fibre comes away from. A blanket would be the best use for this wool, you see children with their comfy, blanky or whatever this would make a lovely cuddle up to, this is putting me in the notion of knitting a blanket with it. Arran can be a bit rough for babies unless you use baby arran which has a different mix and wont irritate.

Thank you all for your help.

The pattern I have is from the Michael’s website for a Knitted Angel Baby blanket done on 10mm needles.
I haven’t seen anything like the wool over here, other than Sirdar snowflake I hated knitting with that, but it looks like the closest thing.  I don’t have a local wool supplier other than Hobbycraft, but it might be worth a look. I am going to take a look at your suggestions and if I can’t find anything I may have to bite the bullet and send to the US for it.

Sirdar denim ultra is lovely and soft and comes in some pretty pastel shades. I kniitted witha shade called waterlilly I think and it was a really pretty washed out aqua.

Searched ravelry and came up with a couple of suggestions for you: -

Aero - King Cole
Twister Chunky - King Cole
Denim Ultra - Sirdar
Fleece - Stylecraft

Good luck

I have had a good look around and have decided to order some Denim ultra in Hyacinth for a scarf hood for myself and do the baby blanket in Wendy Velvet Flake… I would have liked to have used Sirdar Snowflake Glacier in white, but no one seems to have any white for sale, its all bold colours which seem a little too strong for a newborn… Thank you all for your suggestions and your kind messages of welcome
