Fall asleep sitting up whilst knitting. I’m curious if its just me but quite often after hubby has gone to bed and I’m sat up on my own to carry on knitting for a while I suddenly wake up. I’m still sat upright with pins in my hand and held up in the air as if still knitting. I think the longest I’ve managed it for is around 45 mins but it’s usually only for 5 or 10 mins and when I wake up I realise it’s time for bed. Trying to get to the end of a row before I put my knitting away though then is quite a feat. I had one incident when it took 3 or 4 attempts before I got to the end because I kept dropping back off.
It’s not just of a nightime though. I also do it in the afternoons around around 2 o clock. Lethal time for me.

I can’t fall asleep sitting up, although I have it on good authority that it will come. My nan kinda nestles her chin on her chest and goes off mid-row of knitting and also when reading too and then wakes up and carries on after about 15mins.

Can you fall asleep anywhere though?? some peeps just have the knack. I once endured about 10hrs of agony on a flight back from LA as I was so tired but just couldn’t go to sleep sitting on a plane. It was one of the worst feelings!

I don’t think I could on a plane but thats more to do with the fact that I snore and would be just sooooo embarssed. But I can most places admittedly, when I’ve had enough I can pretty much drop at will. Drives hubby potty, he’s a stresshead and always has trouble dropping off (and my snoring doesn’t help much either red face ).

The other way round with me, my hubby always asleep and snores so loud he woke someone up over the road before!!! Windows were open though! He works in London and keeps a train full amused at the noises he produces! I always fall asleep when I have finished knitting, then wake up about 3 in the morning and go to bed!!

It must be all the running around after those two wee ragamuffins Nicky…

I haven’t fallen asleep during the knitting yet but I suspect it’s on the cards. It seems to me that the regular movements produced by a pattern sort of lull me and I feel my eyes start to close.  I manage to bring myself back for a bit but not too long.  Depending on how iminent I think sleep is, I may try and finish the row first or in severe cases, I’ll just put the knitting down somewhere safe mid-row because I know I won’t be able to stay awake any longer!  Unfortunately it’s an occupational hazard for a knitter with M.E.!

I have been known to almost nod off whilst knitting in my lunch break. I don’t think I was fully asleep but I did jolt when one of my colleagues came in and said” Is Chris knitting in her sleep” as I was doing it with my eyes shut & not paying any attention to the rest of the world.
