Like many others on here I hate sewing up, so if I have to it is my own fault, because I can do steeks.  I only wish yarn other than pure wool was suitable for steeks.

Hi
A steek is a vertical column of say 10 stitches.  When knitting a cardigan, knit it on circular needles and insert the vertical column as you go along by knitting the extra stitches at the end of every row.  Then at the armhole stage insert a left steek and a right steek.  Then when the front and back are done, simply cut up the vertical steek at the front and then pick up the button band as one would pick up stitches round a neck.  Then cut up the steeks in the arm and pick up stitches.  Sleeves are always knit from the top down.  At first you need nerves of steel to cut up your hard work.  But once it has been done, a glass of wine works wonders in calming you down!  Check out you tube for video demos, and try google putting in “steeks”.  The best written instructions I found were in Alic Starmore’s fair isle book.  I have to go and eat my tea which is on the table now, or I would have put some links in!!!
Happy knitting

I don’t know about that - I’m 34 and I still get weird looks from friends when I say I knit.  Trouble is, it’s perceived as only being for ‘old people’ because non-knitters are unaware of all the cool things there are to knit!  I’m still determined to make a Noni bag so that when people ask me where I got it from, I can say I made it myself!!!
