My first attempt at knitting came out looking like a polo. I dropped so many stitches and knitted the tail and other weird stuff that I ended up with a round tangled wool creation with a big hole in the middle! Nice.
So, share your first attempts please? I have no pics I’m afraid as that was about 23 years ago!! I started knitting again in earnest over the world cup and knit a red and white striped scarf from DK on 7mm needles. Didn’t get my changes all on the ws but it looked ok and fiance does wear it on occassion as it is Arsenal colours!
Sure I have a pic of that somewhere…
Oh my word you have started something now What did I knit first??? Heaven only knows it was 50 odd years ago!!!!!!!!!!!! but I do remember buying a knitting machine years ago and He who nags (about wool taking over) had a go and managed to knit a very nice length of stocking stitch with a very large neat hole right in the middle!!!! we never did master the infernal thing and sold it to an uncle who made lots of things on it. It brings me back to why I knit...the machine did not seem tactile or personal enough..the feel of the two needles is best for me and has been for!!!!!!!years. And far more projects to remember except for the first baby cardie for my eldest who is 40 this year!!!! doesnt time fly when you are having fun? from GILL
My first adventure with wool was with my grandmother when i was eight..she tried to show me the basics with a ball of white wool..it was black by time I gave up!....Fast forward..age 18, the moment I became an addict to wool, was in crochet, making a baby outfit for my son...it wasn’t for another 10 years that I picked up knitting pins again. I still love crochet first, but knitting, is so close behind it might as well be a tie! My first knitting project was a chunky crew neck jumper for my son. I also had a knitting machine and made lots of baby things for a Dublin market stall for a few years. I didn’t like the machine as much, just not the same as having the needles & wool in hand!
Opurple, Love your pics, you make the cutest things. Also so glad I’m not the only one who was making babies at such a young age, I’d got two children at 18.

My first attempt at knitting was when my nan taught me. I was around 6. It was a lemon coloured scarf I think for my baby dolls. I had a twin pram and dolls for christmas and a load of hand knitted dolls clothes from my nan and I think thats what she was knitting when she taught me. I remember her telling me they were for her friends grandaughter and I was a little put out so she offered to teach me. I was so chuffed though when I opened them Christmas morning.
Ater that it was Sindy clothes (in the dark days before barbie!). Boob tubes and strapless disco dresses!
My first garment was for my half brother I was about 13 and I knitted a matinee jacket. There must have been so many mistakes but give her her due my dads wife did put it on him if only the once to bring him round to our house in it. (It’s about the nice thing I have to say about the woman).
Then I didn’t really knit again until pregnant at 16 with my daughter. I worked in an office at the time and all the ladies were much older and all knitters/crocheters. They were great in teaching me so much. They used to photocopy me all their patterns on the office copier and the leaving presents I had were beautiful. They had all knitted me outfits including a pram set in 3ply and georgous crochet jackets. I’m not sure if I still have them in the loft.
Nothing else survived so no pics thank god but will try to post some more current stuff once children are back at school.
HI NICKY. and a big thank you...you have just reminded me that my 40yr old,s cardie is in a box somewhere in my sewing room!! I must dig it out and have a looksee. Although when I go in ther I forget to come out again teehee. I see you managed to escape the boys for a minute or two!! GILL
I’m trying to outfox them with tiny stays on the pc and more regular trips to see what they are up to! Hopefully it will take them longer to cotton on.!!!!!!!!!
My first knit (Well technically I had nothing to show in class) was when I was 7. We were being taught to knit in school and we all had to produce a teddy. Unfortunately at the tender age of 7 I didn’t realise about casting off and while my mum was asleep upstairs, I cut it off the needles and it all unravelled. I think I was the only one in the class who had no teddy to show. Oh well, I’ve learned to cast-off now!
Hey guys,
Great stories, I am flattered you all responded so promptly to my post. I work in a call centre so I’m not about during the day so it was lovely to come home and read all the answers! Aw fergus that is such a tragedy :( never mind, as Gill says at least you kept at it. Yaaaaay!
Kids so young is scary to me cos I worry I’ve left it too late being 30 and just getting around to marrying decent daddy material. Would have loved kids younger, my mum had all of us three by 25.

Montaffero...you’ve time to have at least four or five and you’re still young enough to enjoy them...so get going girl… and just think of all the ‘aunties’ you will have on here to knit for you.
This thread is fascinating, I love reading about how everyone else got addicted
Thank you for the lovely compliments about the pics...it’s so nice to be able to share with other crafters, who KNOW, how it’s done!I hope to add to the flickr often! I could spend hours looking at the amazing things people create with whats basically two stick and a string! (or one hooked stick )
