Ok.. this is just to see if i’m going mad or not, whether its just me or if others feel the same.
Ive seen a far few posts around the forum about how folks are getting bored of free needles with every mag (apart from the odd dvd).
If people are complaining then how come we are having more needles all the time?
So I thought i’d propose a poll to see whether the majority love needles or are bored of them and want something new? I loved the crochet hooks and even the idea of sock needles with a sock booklet - gets people to try new techniques. But needles with just one or two patterns seems a bit :S.
As I already have about 6 full sets of needles I do not need more, but I do appreciate that new knitters might like them. However I subscribe to several knitting mags and the freebies on those are really good. Tape measures, gauges, clips to hold the project together and all sorts of knitty stuff.
SO, PLEASE LK a little more imagination would be much appreciated.
I find the free needles are too short for me. I can’t knit with them and give them away to a friend for her little girl. I have a couple of full sets any way, although maybe new knitters may appreciate them.
As a relatively new (again) knitter, the free needles are great, but I seem to have many sets of 4mm now, the odd larger size, but too short, so good and bad there!! I have a nearly full set now, from 2 to 20mm! Just got the 20mm for a string bag pattern, I have put some sets in for charity, but the funky coloured ones I will keep for my daughter, when or if she ever wants to knit a bit!!
I’ve just voted ‘no more needles’...but I hope I haven’t spoiled it for new knitters on here. The gift needles are nice but not all that practical....but they will be useful for children learning to knit…
SORRY CHERYL....don’t be mad at me....pleeeeaaaase
love my new needles .... sorry ladies i am a groat (a gather up as you go along!) and you can never have enough needles, hooks, stitch markers cable needles need i go on ........
I voted no, but then I’m lucky enough to have most needle sizes that I need, plus a largeish collection that my mum gave me. But I should think for a new knitter it’s a great way of starting a collection.
hi everyone
I am fairly new to knitting, but bought loads of needles at the carboot, perhaps we could have a packet of needles for sewing up knitted garments, I am always putting mine down and they get lost,or perhaps the way this nanny state is going you can’t have needles like that on the front of mags where kids might pick them up.

I agree - you can never have too many needles! Especially if you are a serial starter like me!!!

I agree with Jane, I’ve got two large bags full of needles, most I’ve bought myself but also loads inherited from my mum or my Aunt. The needles I’ve got from the front of magazines are usually too large for anything I do, although James and Louise love them and if it encourages them to start then that’s a good thing.
I agree with another poster who suggested yarn samples and this would work really well for having a central source to send knitted squares to for charity blankets.
I an happy for a free gift and while I have loads of needles most of them are vintage grey metal so a few jazzy pairs brighten up my needles bags. Measuring tapes are good, I’m always losing them (or with two males who need to measuring tapes for work they get nicked so a lovely pink one with LK emblazoned on it might put them off.... well hubby anyway but probably not Luke.
I’m quite happy to get a free gift in whatever shape, although I’m not sure I get the yarn sample idea. Like others mention I also get other knitting magazines and like the ‘notions’ that I get free with them, I’ve had some lovely stich markers, some buttons, clips for holding knitting together etc. These are the things that I think most knitters would be happy to get multiples of. As a new knitter I do like the needles as they help build up my collection but I was rather disapointed this month as I already have some lovely surina 15mm needles and the free ones were no where near as nice. However I am looking forward to the sock stuff next month as a new knitter of socks! I think the key to us all being pleased with the free gift is variety, needles are great sometimes but everymonth get a little dull.

I like the edea of a bright pink LK emblazoned tape measure Nicky...just the thing....hope ‘the powers that be’ are watching in
I think if I was just starting out knitting I would be greatful for needles, but I would rather have stuff as in other magazines, buttons, pin wheel, and yes a tape measure would be good, perhaps needles one month then something else the next to keep everyone happy newbies and oldies, (in the knitting sense ) x Janet
