Let's Knit Magazine - Your knitting, your style

I looked through this and thought I would have a go at True Romance, the shrug type thing.  I would do a sample square first to see if I liked the pattern, I followed the instructions and thought it looked odd, it was only when I reached round 4 that I realised the instructions were American and not English.  Fortunately I realised, frogged it and started again but how is a beginner supposed to know this especially when there are english how to instructions in the back of the booklet.  It surely isn’t beyond someone at Let’s Knit towers to have realised this before it went to print.  How many more of the patterns are the same and why can we not be informed of this somewhere on the pattern.

Mmmm, you would think in a British mag the instructions would be British wouldn’t you?

Exactly, and how confusing to someone who is new to crochet.  It is quite a simple pattern once you know that a dc stitch is actually a treble etc.

Hi! I had the same problem with this pattern. I tried to email the mag at the support addres in the mag and it’s been sent back undelivered three times.

I’m still working on it. I was ok with it once i worked out what was going on as I work with English or American terms depending on the pattern, but I did think it was very confusing, espscially to someone new to crochet, as the pattern didn’t tie in with the instructions in the back of the book.

I’ve tried again to email lets knit about the problem with this pattern and again the email has not been delivered.

I have now finished this. Piccys when I get them loaded onto the computer.

I emailed Sarah about this after my earlier post, this was her reply:-

Hi Helen
Apologies for the mix up with this particular pattern. It caught us off guard because the book it comes from is a UK book, plus the text of the printed pattern is in UK style, so we were not expecting americanised text. The publisher must have sent this to us by mistake, and I’m afraid at that point it was not picked up on. It is a shame as we went to some trouble to ensure we only sourced UK patterns (there are some lovely US crochet books out there but we did not use any patterns from these precisely because of the terminology problem). 

I don’t believe that any of the other patterns are in American style - not intentionally anyway!

I still think this is a poor excuse, surely this was a simple error that could have easily been resolved before printing.

Have now finished it but don’t like it as much as I thought I would.

Proof readers are a dying breed. Just look at the national newspapers these days. 

I’ve still had my emails to the support address sent back, and aulthough Helenhlns seems to have managed to contact the editor there is still nothing on the corrections page.
