I don’t know if this explanation will come out right but here goes!! You take the edge of the piece you want the stitches on and put you needle through near to the edge, then put the wool around the needle as if you are knitting an ordinary stitch, pull back through the edge and you should have a stitch on your needle. Repeat right along until you have the required number of stitches. You only use one needle. Hope that helps!! Perhaps some one has seen an explanation on You Tube.

You can always do like Waggel said and put a crochet hook through the fabric at the point you want to start eg, edge of neck. Then bring the wool through and put the loop onto a needle and then knit the st off the needle as you would if it was an ordinary row. This is a bit of a long winded way of doing it but easy for beginners.
