Hello all,

I wonder if someone could help me interpret this bit of pattern? I’m making a jumper, have done the 2x2 rib, and am ready to start on the main part, which is stocking stitch. I’m working on a wrong-side row, and the pattern says:

*Rib 1(rib2tog, rib 1) 5 times, rep from * to last 3 sts

I know the * means to repeat from that point, but what about the brackets? Is it that the 5 repeats only applies to the bit in brackets? If so, why is the star not in front of the rib2tog?

Also, as the rib is K2, P2, when I need to knit two together, if one is K and one is P, which do I do?

Bah! I’m confused....

Thanks in advance,

Glyn xx

you start from the* so you will find that what you are actually knitting is r2 r2tog.
When you need to knit 2tog if the first st is a k then you knit2tog but if the first st is a purl then you will p2tog. As you knit through the pattern it will become clear when you look at it.

Hi Gill,

Thanks for the quick reply, that did help. I’ve done the row now, and it all semed to go ok, but I have 52 stitches instead of 48. I guess I’ve missed a couple of r2tog somewhere. Can’t find the mistake, it all seems to work, but obviously it’s there somewhere. Off to try and figure it out…

Thanks again,

Glyn xx

I find it helps writing it all down in longhand and then cross them off as I do them, also helps if you need to leave it in the middle of it too, x Janet
