Thanks for the welcome everyone!  Sorry not to have acknowledged you sooner but I don’t have a computer at home so can only log on at work (not in works time I hasten to add).

I don’t really knit for a specific charity.  I usually do some things for Operation Christmas Child and I’ve been making hats for the Save The Children appeal, and at the moment I’m doing bandages!!  Sounds mad to be knitting bandages, but they’re for leprosy patients, apparently hand-knitted bandages are better for them because they’re breathable and more hard-wearing than woven ones.  I’ll look for the link and post it on the Charities forum in case anyone is interested.

And I’ll certainly give Abebooks a try - sounds like they have some good bargains.  I usually use Amazon but they don’t always give that good a discount.
