Hi! I’ve committed to knitting Grace (issue 6) for my mum for her birthday as a surprise, I spent £20 on the cashmere which is gorgeous, but I don’t really understand the chart. I think I need to find a way of making it easier in my head as it has put me off and I can’t pick my work up again. It’s her birthday on the 21st of this month so I really need to get cracking!! Please, please can someone give me some advise or perhaps a way of making it a bit easier? I have no problem with patterns or different stitches but the chart and pattern repeat have really thrown me! Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. oh oh

Hi I agree chart is there for if you prefer to knit from a chart or instructions are in written pattern.I would check with Sarah at lets knit though cos it says knit first 20 rows then knit next 10 and repeat these ten until you have length but text only gives you 9 rows not 10.You don,t want to knit a pattern if it has mistake in it if you have spent that much on yarn and if there is one mistake I can’t tell if there are any others without knitting it.
Good luck Waggel

HI Pollyx....I haven’t done the pattern you are doing but click onto the ‘pattern corrections’ in the home page of this site in case there is a mistake in the pattern.  They print corrections for any mistakes in the LK patterns...so check it out.  It is on the right hand side of the home page.  Best of luck.

I have a metal plate and magnets that I use to follow charts etc. You put the metal plate behind the page you are working on and then underline your work with magnetic strips and you can then see at a glance which line of work you are on.
If you don’t have one of these then a “post it” note does the same job.  smile

Fab idea gill! I’ll try that! I think I’m starting to get the hang of it now, I think patience and a lot of counting with the chart as a pattern guide is called for! I’ve photocopied the pattern too now so I can write all over it and not have to worry about my nice mag getting scribbled on!
Thank you for kindly sharing your tips. I really appreciate it.x

What a good idea!  I’m constantly losing my place, might help with the dreadful cable thing in particular… Gill, I am rechristening you geniusgill (will it catch on? who knows? :p )

oooo ta!!! It is really No1 who deserves the praise as she found the magnetic plate idea at Harrogate Knitting Show a few years ago. We found mine on the web recently and I will try to find the web we ordered it from.
No1 uses hers for xst charts as you get quite a few magnetic strips and then you can square off your chart into smaller working chunks but it is great for knitting rows.

Hi!
Thank you so much for all of your help everybody.
I just thought I’d post to say that I’m not using the chart and have worked out that when you’re on your second block of pattern you do the pattern rep twice, on the third you do it three times and so on. Much easier than i thought!
I hope this helps anyone who decides to try this pattern! It’s a really beautiful shawl. Good luck to anyone who tries it!xxx
