Hi to anyone out there!

I have begun to knit the socks in the las edition of Let’s Knit, but found the chart confusing.  I’m not sure if there is a mistake or if it’s me.  Anyone else had a problem? confused

Hello and welcome Sue.  I don’t do socks either I’m afraid, and I haven’t used charts much so I’m not a lot of help to you.  As Gill says, there will be sock people along soon… wink

PS.  I would look at the chart for you but my friend has the mag at the moment. Are there written instructions as well??? There usually are both so if you can follow the written ones easier would that get you right?

Hi I’m looking at the pattern now but I warn you I’m not a sock knitter but thought I would take a look as maybe it was not a sock problem but a chart/general knitting problem.
The first thing that hits me is you are knitting in the round on dpns and so I always thought if you are knitting in the round then you are always knitting with the rightside facing but they have given instructions for rightside and wrongside although I suppose these could have been given for if somebody wanted to knit flat and then sew up.
You do not say how experienced you are or if its the first time you have used a chart. So I apologise if I sound a bit up my own bum, but also very wrong technically as well. Please jump in anyone who can understand this.
Usually on a chart you read left to right on a rightside row but right to left on a wrongside row. I would have thought that working in the round and so rightside always facing you would read every row left to right?????
Have you tried knitting a tension square?? Maybe knitting a small test piece flat will help you understand it better by seeing the pattern develop and get used to the stitches.
If I have confused you more I apologise sincerely reading them back they look like the ramblings of a mad woman.

The pattern is available on this site, for anyone who hasn’t got the magazine in front of them…

I haven’t tried it though (although I might when I’ve finished the other things I have on the go!) and am not a very experienced knitter so can’t really help further I’m afraid!

Hi Sueleaver,

I have read the sock pattern and to be honest, if you are a beginner to knitting you should really practice the knit2together (k2tog) and the ‘Turn’.

What exactly are you not understanding, maybe I can help!

Susan
