Hi

I also learnt with “the happy hooker”, her tutorials are brilliant and although all the terms are US speak i.e the single crochet in US is called double crochet here, it is easy to convert once you are up and running.  I only started in January but have worked through several patterns easily since - even managing to adapt things along the way without too much trouble.

I find crochet so much easier than knitting and damn quick to finish something up - its also ultra portable.

Keep persevering - there are now so many lovely patterns coming out for crochet that easily rival knitting.

My next project now is to learn knitting!

My free crochet hooks from LK are still around if anyone wants them.

I have tried several times with the bamboo crochet hooks, and just don’t like them.  I prefer the slippiness of the metal ones.

I have also bought myself one with a light on the end, that is a plastic hook.  It’s a bit squeaky, however instead of being a straight handle, it has a bulky handle which makes it so much more comfortable to hold for long periods of time.  I think I’m going to investigate the Clover ergonimic ones.

Not doing too bad although I’ve made a big boo boo with the stiches. I’m making the rucksack from the booklet and I’ve been doing the American Treble rather than the English version! Oops! The tension is rubbish so I’ll probably end up lining the inside of the bag.

I am quite pleased with myself though considering the last time I crocheted was when I was at junior school which was over 30 odd years ago!  wink

I’m systematically moving all the stock from my local Hobbycraft store to my house. Therefore I think that Hobbycraft Group Ltd should let me live there...

It’s after you do the chain I have problems with...trying dc and all the other instructions.

KnittingOma,

I learned to crochet before learning to knit, and I also think it is easier than knitting, for me it is anyway.

I just wanted to reassure you that after you’ve done the chain, crocheting your first row into the chain is really difficult - in addition to actually figuring out how to do the stitches, it’s awkward because there is so little to hold on to, and it twists up so you don’t know whether you’re looking at the right side. Once you have got a row of real stitches, it is sooooooooooooooo much easier.

One idea that might help is if you do a practise piece using a a yarn that isn’t too hairy, and a big hook - bigger than recommended for the yarn. I often found that my fuzzy woolly pieces didn’t look much like the clear line-drawings in the book, but this makes it a bit easier to see how the stitch is formed, and where to put the hook.

Hope this helps, do stick at it!

And I’ve not been counting my stitches and have managed to increase by about 15 around the main body of the bag. Looking a bit misshapen but hey! it’ll still function perfectly as a bag eh?  cool smirk

Has anyone had a go at crocheting with plarn? Being a bit of an eco warrior I fancy having a go but would like to know anyone elses experiences. Is it strong enough? Is it easy to work with?  question

I’m not too sure on the Bamboo hooks, plus one of mine has a flaw so kept snagging my wool which was very annoying.

I’ll have another go when I’m not so hooked on my Rowan Denim project I’m working on now.  Hence the reason for me being away from the PC.
