Its all happened today, I got my delivery of wool and crochet animal purse patterns at last.  I then got a phone call to say I start my new job on Monday, so WHOOPEE.

Will get my photos done as soon as possible but am now going to start making some more christmas presents.

Thanks girls for your kindness.

I will be working part time (more time for my hobbies) as an Administrator/Typist for a Dementia Home.  Worked 5 years in Dementia and loved it then but as a carer.

I have already made 3 scarves of my own design with a crochet flower on them for christmas presents.  I wouldnt say I am organised though, I just like to have a spare bit of cash at christmas when there are some bargains around the shops.

My MIL (mum in law ) is awkward for presents cause she doesnt use perfumed smellies, is funny with clothes and doesnt like ornaments or things.  Has anyone else got a MIL like that and maybe got a few ideas!

Love Susan

I have’nt got one...I am one but all the gifts I am given are loved for the giver and the thought behind it NOT the gift itself.
DO ASK your MIL. I am sure if you do that she will appreciate the fact that you want to buy or make something that SHE wants, not what someone thinks she OUGHT to have.

...my Mum sounds like your MIL.

Ditto!  And she never knows what she wants… it’s her birthday coming up and I have no ideas whatsoever.

One thing that went down well last year was adopting a tree from the woodland trust which i did for Mum and Dad’s ruby wedding anniversary - things like that, or tickets to things they would like to do tend to go down better than anything else I find now.

Here’s the woodland trust link if it’s useful for anyone else with awkward present recipients - http://www.woodland-trust.org.uk/plantatree/

And susan, enjoy the drink, chocolate and knitting, sounds like you’ve earned it!

Gill, you really dont know my mother in law.  I love her to bits and she has said she is awkward to get for.

I have bought her plants for the garden, I bought her a Denby China Set out of Debenhams but she has never used it cause she is afraid to and you cant buy clothes because everything iritates her.  You cant buy her house plants cause they get bugs on.Have made her a patchwork quilt one year and some tricky patchwork cushions.

I tried the suggestion a while back about tickets out for the movie or theatre but she likes to be in bed by 9pm cause she is up at 6 every morning.  I even offered to buy her a new kitchen cupboard but she said she will wait till it falls down. I bought her a Spode Christmas Plate once and she only uses it once a year (if its lucky).

Anyone else got a family member like that!

My MIL is very difficult to buy for as well, whatever I buy nowadays I just make sure it has a gift receipt with it so she can take it back and have no hassle with an exchange.

Instead of things..why not things to do....with you? Like days out for shopping ..or a lunch....or a visit to stately garden...or a voucher for a dinner for all four of you. I am at the age I prefer gifts of time, and fun memories than something else to dust!

Gift vouchers for a new hairstyle come in handy and one friend of mine was thrilled to bits when I sent her an ENORMOUS bag of fertiliser tied with a big pink bow. It kept her garden going for months.
I had a very dear old lady friend and I used to make up a special hamper at Xmas, but you cold do one for any occasion. I would put lots of small tins or packets of the things I knew she liked, that way nothing was unwanted.

Susan, your MIL sounds a lot like my grandma although she does use smellies but has started requesting that we don’t buy her them as she has too many! We’ve tried alsorts but she usually asks for a boots voucher which we don’t enjoy giving so we bulk it up with other stuff. We tried jewellery because I make jewellery and she didn’t appreciate that because she doesn’t get that handmade doesn’t mean on the cheap. We’ve tried flowers but then she complains that she has too many. She won’t eat chocolates because my Grandad is diabetic and can’t have them so they aren’t an option.

BUT…

Recently we put together lots of different exotic fruits in one of those reusable sack bags which went down well. Another time we popped into their favourite cafe and asked them to do us a gift voucher for them which also went down quite well. And then we’ve done nicely wrapped selections of her favourite jams and other healthy treats. Hopefully those ideas might help! I’d love to hear everyone elses though for future inspiration!

I`ve got my mother & mother in laws birthdays one day after each other at the beginning of June which is hard. This year I asked my mother what she wanted, the answer was a bottle of Vodka which was nice & easy! For mothers day my MIL hinted for a bracelet, she didn`t have it but had it for her birthday instead. Thankfully she liked it, I kept the receipt just in case. One year for Christmas, she gave me & my SIL a bracelet each. I didn`t like it but put on a smile when I opened it. I took it back to where I thought it came from (because of the box it came in), they said that they didn`t do bracelets like that.  red face I discovered off my SIL that day that the bracelet was an old one my MIL had given to her. What a fool I felt when I left the shop. I wished my MIL was honest in saying what she had done.
