Hi I’m Jan a.k.a. The Woolhunter. I’ve been passionate about art and colours since I could first hold a pencil and draw. My Dad still has books with my baby scribbles on the pages to prove it! I drew on anything and everything but luckily Dad worked for a printers and brought home lots of spare paper and pencils so that I could vent my creativity. Although I was born in London, I now live in Pembrokeshire with my husband and our two Jack Russell Terriers close to the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, an area which is famed for its outstanding natural beauty and rugged coastline. I learned to knit when I was about 7 after my Auntie Elsie & Uncle George bought me a Kids’ Knitting Kit for Christmas. From that day on I was hooked (or was it needled?) It took me a while to get going as I am left handed and my poor late Mum was exasperated by my knitting “back to front”. Finally I got the knack of knitting right handed (although I still hold the needles in my own way). Everyone was then treated to my knitted offerings - even if they didn’t always turn out right whilst I was learning - they got them just the same complete with holes, knots and dropped stitches! Although I still paint, draw and design my own tapestries (when I have the time) my first love is knitting. Wherever I go, the knitting goes as well, in the car, on the train and even on the plane (using airline friendly needles of course)! Two years ago, I had to give up my full time career after a long illness. Sat at home and totally frustrated by the lack of colourful commercial knitting yarns, I discovered Ebay and decided to start my own business selling yarns from small companies/artists based around the world. Things rapidly moved on and I started dyeing my own yarn and designing my own patterns in January 2007. However, I still sell yarns from other suppliers. Although a lot of my colours are inspired from the place where we live, some days I just get colourways bursting to get out of my head -often the brighter the better especially if it involves shades of blue and pink. I dye in small batches, usually twice a week,so there are always new colourways available. Most colourways are not repeated so this makes each batch unqiue. The undyed yarn I use is mainly British, often with Blue Faced Leciester content and of a high quality. Although I use commercial dyes the tecnique I have developed is as ecologically friendly as possible. If you do make anything from the Woolhunter Yarns & Patterns range, I’d love to see your pictures of the finished results. If you have a colourway in mind that isn’t listed, it is possible for me to custom dye it for you but most importantly, if you have any queries regarding any of the yarns I sell, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. |
