What you need to know

Make a trio of toy soldiers with Zoë Halstead's simple knitting pattern.

Designed by the fantastic Zoë Halstead, these toy soldiers would make a wonderful addition to your collection of Christmas decorations. Even beginner knitters should give this pattern a go, as it is much easier than it looks! All three soldiers are worked in the same way, with the only difference being the shades of yarn that you are using. Then, it is just a matter of knitting the stylish hats and decorative drums!

Top knit tips

If you decide to give this trio to a lucky loved one, why not see if you can knit one of the soldiers in their likeness? Perhaps the jacket could be their favourite colour or maybe you could add in some hair?

If you have lots of knitted pieces to sew up, it's important that you label your work as you go and leave a long yarn tail every time you cast off. To cinch the neck of your soldiers, you will need to use running stitch. This is the simple process of pushing the needle in and out of your work at small and regular intervals. For the rest of the soldier, you can either use mattress stitch or backstitch.
