What you need to know

Learn how to knit an i-cord with Charmaine Fletcher’s jolly trio of Santa decorations.

There is something very pleasing about a set of three, which always seems to make the perfect arrangement whether hanging from a festive bough or sitting on a shelf – it's the main reason we've lined up three of these easy Santa cone decs. Easy i-cords form the dangly arms and legs, and small beads add extra character to the faces. Be sure to put a couple of stitches in the mouth to give each one a little smile! If you’re gifting or storing these, pad each one with tissue or line with card to maintain the cone shape.

What do I need?

Yarn: King Cole Luxury Merino DK, shades 2613 Candy Apple, 2612 Cream, 2611 Black, one 50g ball of each

Crochet hook (optional)
Buttons: wooden, 15mm, three
Beads: 3mm, black, six, red, three
Stitch markers
Sewing needle and matching threads
Mini pom-pom maker or four-pronged fork
Kitchen towel, for blocking upright
Tapestry needle

NOTE: quantities are enough to make three Santas

Top knit tips

Double over 40cm of yarn, thread through a tapestry needle and set aside. Take a fork and anchor the yarn through a left-hand prong; wrap around the fork from right to left 40 times, hold to stop it unwinding. Thread the tapestry needle between the central prongs, under the wrapped yarn and up through the doubled yarn; pull tight. Ease the pompom off the fork, tighten the binding yarn and knot securely. Cut open the loops, fluff up and trim, noting it is flat on one end and round on the other.

When making a fork pom-pom, try not to use a fork that is curved at the top as this will not make a pom-pom that is evenly spherical.
